WHERE WILL I LIVE?

If you are a SAWS worker your employer MUST offer you accommodation, you can choose not to live there but most workers find it easier to live on site.

The most common form of accommodation on farms is mobile homes or caravans. These normally accommodate 4-6 workers with two in each bedroom (single and double beds), but each camp is different. They are normally self-contained, which means they have their own shower room and toilet and their own kitchen. BUT, some may not be self contained, some camps may have separate shower / kitchen blocks.

Other accommodation such as portable cabins may be provided (typically 4-8 in each unit in bunk beds), with separate kitchen and bathroom facilities. Before you arrive to your placement we will let you know the specific details of the accommodation available at the placement.

Farms will provide laundry and washing rooms so you can clean your clothes, some of these may be Free, others may be coin operated.

Most farms will try and provide recreational areas, with TV / Video, pool table, table tennis - the facilities available will vary depending on the farm, we will let you know what facilities will be available at the farm you are placed on.

The rent charged by most farms in 2009/10 is £31.57 per week per person. You may also need to buy gas bottles as they run out, you may be able to buy these from the farm or local shops the farm will be able to let you know, the cost of these are normally spilt between the occupants of the caravan or mobile home. The rent is deducted from your wages on a weekly basis. If for some reason the farm is unable of offer you at least 15 hours of work in a week then the rent will be free of charge (farms may also reduce rent at their discretion based on the hours you have worked).

Most farms charge a damage deposit which will be refunded when you leave the site as long as the accommodation has been looked after, this deposit can vary between £50.00 - £100.00
