The UK embassy, high commission and consulate (also known as 'diplomatic missions' or 'posts') in your country will be pleased to discuss visa requirements with you. Allow a reasonable amount of time to do this before you enter the UK as bureaucracy works very slowly in some countries. Do not make any travel or work plans until you have spoken to the necessary authorities and secured your passport and visa. You will not be allowed to enter a foreign country without the correct papers.

Working agreements between EU, new EU, EEA and EFTA and Commonwealth member states are relatively straightforward – significant regulations are listed below. People from any country not listed below are classed as Foreign Nationals and should contact the Home Office or UK embassy prior to travelling.

  EU Member States

All the countries below are full members of the European Union (EU), including the new states that signed the Accession Treaty in April 2003 and became full members on 1st May 2004. Most citizens in possession of a passport or, in some cases, international identity card have the freedom to move between countries and offer or accept employment with no restrictions, except for registering at a police station after 3 months to continue working. A ‘Workers Registration Scheme’ has been introduced for nationals from 8 of the new member states; Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Slovakia and Slovenia. Citizens must register with the Home Office as soon as they find work. It is your responsibility to do this, although your employer is obliged to check you have been issued with a registration certificate. Cyprus and Malta entered the EU with no restrictions.
